Australian Championships Heads Lifters to the Worlds

The 2024 Australian Championships unwound over two long days at Brisbane North Barbell under the meticulous supervision of meet director Dave Napper. Some top lifters passed over the Aus Champs to be set for the Worlds in Sydney in October but a dozen up and coming Nauru lifters added extra quality to the field.

In the men’s lifting improving Ben Hogan trekked from Horsham to take out Best Lifter with 690kg at 94kg. Stealing the show though were the Napper Twins, winners at 120 and 120+kg in the Australians, although outshone in the heavier class by Dagaban Harris of Nauru. Promising results came from new lifters Tevita Pongi 700@120 and 105kg winner Mitchell Moszko.

In the women’s hardy perennial Isabella Thomson continued her injury battle to nevertheless take out Best Lifter well clear of Tasha Page and Leila Warnes.

The Bench Press saw Masters World Records come from John Dellow at age 83 and the relatively youthful John Yuen, still learning the ropes at 80. Ian Middlemiss continued to chase the 40-44 WR at 105kg and continued to just miss, 3kg shy of the needed 206kg. But out in front as Best BPer was Liam Te Kani-Walters with a big but easy 231kg.,on the way to 250kg at the Worlds.

Champion Club was host BNB over World Powerlifting Melbourne.

Stand by now for the big event of the year, the World Powerlifting Championships at AusFitness Expo in Sydney.
