2023 Australian Championships Produces Records

The Australian Championships 2023 wound up with multiple records, many new champions and also some repeaters. Isabella Thomson was once again Womens Best Lifter although down in Total after illness, while Liberian émigré Ivan Freeman was a promising new face as Men’s Best lifter.

Youth standout was Christian Stranges, disposing of the Jett Holling threat 705kg to 642kg. At the other end of the spectrum World age 60+ records came from all of Femmy Ayegun, Wayne Belcher and Leigh Wisbey. But outlasting them all was 79 year old Kai Yuen with a WR 75-79 Bench. Irrepressible Dave Napper was a double winner at 120 and 120 + (yes it’s legal) to single-handedly amass 24 team points.

The Championship top lifters were the guests from Nauru. Langer Olsson Wharton was way out in front with a near record Bench Press of 220kg at 105kg, whilst Wise Temaki was the best international lifter.

From here Australia et al’s best will march on to the World Championships in Rome in October and the Oceanias in Nauru in February.
