To be eligible to compete at National Championships or to be selected for teams to International Championships lifters must achieve certain standards in the calendar year of & prior to the Championships. For international events lifters usually must have competed and placed highly in the prior Australian Championships for their age group and discipline. Full details can be found in the PA Regulations but a summary of qualifying standards is:
|Australian Championships||B Grade||C Grade||D Grade||Have Lifted|
|Oceania & Commonwealth Championships||A Grade||B Grade||C Grade||Have Lifted|
|World Championship||Elite II||A Grade||B Grade||Have Lifted|
Lifters must also have been PA members (and thus drug testable) for a minimum of 6 months (Open) or 3 months (Junior & Masters) prior to the Championships.
For special Championships there may be variations in these requirements e.g. the 2016 Australian Championships at the Fitness and Health Expo will be top 80 lifters only by invitation.
